Why Not Feel As Comfortable with Your Insulation As Your Jeans?

in Insulation, build green

Can you imagine an insulation that feels like your oldest pair of jeans?  How about being able to rub an insulation all over your face without a reaction? Bonded Logic’s UltraTouch cotton insulation is an itch-free, non-toxic solution for keeping your house well insulated.  It is the fourth item on my ThisNext list of my favorite “personally used” green building products.  (For information as to what is my ThisNext list and other items on that list see “What is Next in Green Internet Shopping?”)

This blue colored insulation is made of 85 percent post industrial recycled natural fibers (natural denim and cotton).   It is soft enough to use as a pillow, and has great thermal and sound absorption properties.

Why did I use this product instead of fiberglass?  Most fiberglass insulation contains formaldehyde.  In addition, fiberglass contains a cancer warning required under OSHA for those installing it. (See the fiberglass discussion on the American Lung Association website.)

“UltraTouch contains no chemical irritants and requires no warning labels compared to other traditional products. There are no VOC concerns when using UltraTouch, as it is safe for you and the environment.

UltraTouch is also a Class-A Building Product and meets the highest ASTM testing standards for fire and smoke ratings, fungi resistance and corrosiveness.” (Via Bonded Logic’s website)

There are formaldehyde free fiberglass insulation, including encapsulated fiberglass insulation, on the market today.  However, I did not want to use any fiberglass products.     In my prior house, the insulation was exposed in the attic.  Every time I went up there, I could not stop coughing.  I am sensitive to this type of insulation.  I tried to find a substitute for fiberglass insulation so I could avoid the chance of any fibers escaping and floating around the house.

The cotton insulation was installed in my current house to insulate the inside of the interior walls for sound insulation. I could have easily used it for our exterior walls, but decided to use icynene instead, which is an open-cell sprayed insulation.

At the time when I bought UltraTouch, Bonded Logic only manufactured R13 and R19 batts, but now also manufacture R30 batts. Any DIY’ers could easily use this product.  In my area (the northeast) it can easily cost three times the price of fiberglass insulation but well worth it.

So, cold weather is fast approaching and you need to add some insulation to your attic.  What are you waiting for?  Say good bye to the itch and hello to the comfort and warmth of cotton.
