How about a little glass bead bangle or ear dangle to show that you care about global warming? Well, this is the intent of Amanda and Jeff Haney, founders of Green Beads for Global Awareness,in the creation of their bead jewelry. Amanda explained, “we wanted to make a difference in some way…. and jewelry seemed like a good idea!”
Instead of donning the ever popular Livestrong bands with your charity du jour, consider highlighting that diminutive wrist with either a beautiful tree green glass (picture to the right) or recycled sea green beaded bracelet with an attached silver “go green” charm. Who said showing your support can’t be done with style? The price I might add can’t be beat. The recycled bead bracelet retails for $15.00 and the tree-green bracelet retails for $12.00.
What else do they sell you wonder?
The Company also offers other bracelets, eco-necklaces, and dangling earrings in assorted colors. The earrings pictured to the right contain recycled paper beads all strung on sterling silver. If you are more of a hippie girl, then take a look at the Company’s green beads and hemp bracelet made with fair trade beads. All of their products can be purchased on the website.
I happen to love glass bead jewelry. Over the last couple of years, this is all that I have bought. I am quite smitten with the Company’s green dangle earrings, and they will look great with my spring wardrobe.
The Company is committed to low impact living, so in that vein, all of the Company’s shipping mailers are made out of 100% recycled materials with 25% post-consumer recycled content. In addition, 10% of their profits are being donated to such charities as Trees for Life and Carbonfund.org that are helping to change the world.

In the past several years, I feel I’ve been good about recycling and reusing. At home, we recycle everything, and I’ve encouraged my coworkers and students to recycle, too. We reimagine many of our out-dated items, and if we can’t reuse them, we donate them to thrift stores to benefit local animal shelters. I’m addicted to fountain Diet Coke drinks, but I always bring my own cup to avoid creating unnecessary waste. I, however, have not been as committed to reducing my consumption. Home after grocery shopping, unpacking my canvas tote bags, I realize I’ve bought cookies in individual wrappers or two small sized containers instead of a large bottle. This year, to be greener, I plan to focus more on reducing my consumption, being aware of unnecessary packaging, and in general buying less of what I don’t need.

I like these bracelets and think that they are pretty. Do you want to know what turned me off on them, though? They came to my blog and left a comment that simply had their URL in it. That’s it. It wasn’t a comment on the article, etc. It was blatant spam so I marked it as spam and it never appeared on my blog. This is definitely not a recommended marketing practice.

Thanks. I got an apology email from them. I believe that they are a legit company and trying to do something good and hopefully not greenwashing.
I plan on trying to implement a couple more rain barrels and hopefully figuring out how to use the greywater from my laundry to water the flowers.

This year I will be helping my daughter to collect used sneakers to be sent to Africa and/or Haiti, where shoes are desparately needed. My daughter is a distance runner and this cause is near to her heart because the sneakers are needed for runners who, without them, are oftentimes running barefoot. BTW, if anyone has a suggestion for shipping the sneakers to Africa, we would appreciate the advice. The cost of standard shipping through the post office is about $10 per pair, since surface mail is no longer available.
Also, I frequently purchase on the internet–I will reuse the boxes for shipping the shoes and give the styrofoam popcorn to a local mail store for them to use.

More specifically, look at One World Running (http://oneworldrunning.blogspot.com/) who donates their shoes to Africa, Haiti, and Central America. They are based out of Colorado but have locations for drop off in other states. You can mail your shoes to them if none of the locations work for you. I mailed about 14 pair of shoes to Nike and it cost to me $25.00 so I think it would be much cheaper to mail to Colorado rather than Africa.
In addition, there are a number of other organizations that furnish shoes to children and adults right here in the US so she may also like these charities as well. Anna

It is nice to see when people are trying to make the world a better place. At the moment global warming is the main threat to all living beings on the planet and planet her self. To save the planet we need to GO GREEN. These jewelry will certainly help to get the message across to more and more people. I think this is a great idea. We can be fashionable and at the same time we will be doing something to save the world.
I love this concept…and good post. As an industrial designer recently graduated we as the new designers of now and future are going to focus on a greener more environmentally aware approach to design…I can’t speak for everyone…but I assure you the attitude is changing. Time for governments and organisations alike to hop on board and take a cue from the little people

I would just like to say that there isn’t that much of a major concern over global warming anymore. One of the two major political parties (Republicans) has no interest in addressing climate change. In fact, Republicans are increasingly denying that climate change is even a problem. Out of all the Republican contenders for the Senate in 2010, none support action on climate change, and most deny the existence of anthropogenic global warming.The media has done a terrible job covering climate science, and as a result the public is very poorly informed and often misinformed about the science. When the public doesn’t understand the science, it’s hard to make them understand that climate change is a problem we need to address.The economy is in the crapper. The public is much more concerned about creating jobs and fixing the economy, and as a result climate change has been put on the backburner.
