Charles-Richey

The other day, I received a cryptic message from my friend and fellow blogger, Charles Richey of Las Vegas Real Estate that he was out of treatment and heading to rehab. I could not imagine what he was talking about. For those of you who do not know him, he is a frequent contributor on Green Talk and has always tried to help me out in anyway that I have asked. It is my turn to help out Charles and please read the following posted by Max Chirkov, IBS Team Directory Editor at Ibstream, a real estate blog and directory and consider a donation, a post, and/or just a “get well” comment since he reads this blog:

Our friend and fellow real estate agent, Charles Richey, has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome and is currently in the ICU at the University Medical Center (UMC) in

Guillain-Barre Syndrome: (GBS) (pronounced “ghee-YAN bah-RAY”) is a rare nervous system disorder that results from nerve damage caused by the body’s own immune system, usually in response to an infection or other illness. GBS causes muscle weakness, loss of reflexes, and numbness or tingling in the arms, legs, face, and other parts of the body. It can even progress to complete paralysis. GBS is the most common medical cause of paralysis that develops over days to weeks.

Current.com is “about what’s going on in your world: all the things you and your friends are actually interested in — that you won’t find on any other news site or cable TV channel.” You can watch it online or on your television. Check the site for the channel from your service provider.

On the video, the following websites are featured:

Publix GreenWise Market Offers One Stop Healthy Grocery Shopping

Posted on June 25th, 2008 in food, household products by Green Talk

greenwise store

This week while vacationing in South Florida,  I visted a Publix GreenWise Market Store, a ”green” grocery store.  Just to give you a frame of reference, Publix is an upscale grocery store located throughout the Southeast.  When I lived in Florida, I found that they had the nicest fresh vegetable and fruit selection although pricier than competing grocery stores.

I was intrigued by the concept of a convenient chain grocery store that had created a green grocery store.  Would this store legitmately compete with Whole Foods?  Was it going to be another greenwashing store trying to jump on the green gravy train?

Considering remodeling or building to create an energy efficient home, but are limited by your budget? I recently interviewed Steve Needle of Needle Point Homes, a twenty-four year veteran builder. Not long ago, he completed a Green Globes commercial building called The Point in Morristown, New Jersey and has built several energy efficient homes as well. I asked him if a client came to him requesting an energy efficient house, what would he recommend. Listed below are the essential building blocks of an energy efficient home according to Needle:

Location, location, location, the real estate buzz words. Pick a home to remodel or build in an area where there is an established infrastructure of transportation and easy access to mass transit.

Rubie Green Fabrics are Gems to Behold

Rubie Green’s Marilyn fabric

If you follow Green Talk regularly, then you must know that I love fabric. Who else would take the time to research and write two different articles including 20 plus organic fabric companies? (See “Eco-Friendly Fabric are Gorgeous and Green” and “Eco-Friendly Fabrics are no Longer Shrinking Violets.)

So, add my newest find, Rubie Green, to my ever growing green fabric list. Michele Adams’ designs are fresh, fun, and colorful. I would not expect less from a designer who describes herself as “the only ten-year-old who asked for curtains for her birthday and rearranged her room for fun.”

Should I be worried about this Moth?

Posted on June 19th, 2008 in Gardening by Green Talk

may 2008 318

The other day, I went to open my front door and this beautiful moth was stuck to the door. This is not a touched up photo. This is a real moth that looks like it is stuck to my door. I think it was dead because my friend touched it and it did not move.

When I asked what she thought it was, she replied that it might be a gypsy moth. This did not sound good. The next morning I went out to see if the moth was there and it was gone. Either it was a good actor and played dead well or something ate it.

So, I am asking my readers, what kind of moth is this and should I be worried? If so, what natural product can I use?

Hair Today, Deer Gone Tomorrow

Posted on June 18th, 2008 in Gardening, Readers' Reuse Tips by Green Talk

may 2008

My son came home from a birthday party with a little green mesh bag of candy. What was I going to do with this mesh bag? It is too tiny to hold much and anything that is tiny would slip right out the holes. However, as of late, I have been trying to think of ways to reuse items that ordinarily I would throw in the trash. In the meantime, it sat in my office staring at me with those lime green eyes saying “what about me?”

The other day to get away from those green lime eyes (well, not really, but it makes the story better),
I was in my garden and noticed that all my lilac were nipped. The tops looked like carrots that you just bit into. Ragged and uneven. Who would do this? Let me guess, the deer. I have so much clover in my lawn for them, that I guess they were tired of it and figured the lilacs looked appealing. Who wants to eat peanut butter and jelly all day when you can have ice cream?

A Dab of Butter Makes A Household Chore a Breeze

We sealed our deck two years ago with Weather-Bos. As indicated in my article about this product, it is nontoxic and is absorbed into the wood. However, the company advises that you should reseal your deck every 2 years.

Well, from the looks of my now gray and full of mildew deck, it was definitely time to reseal it. My husband was armed with paint brushes for the railings, rollers, and paint container. With company arriving quicker than we thought and in his haste, he put all of his gooey painting tools in my stainless sink.

Alltop: All the Top Green Stories In One Location

Posted on June 13th, 2008 in environmental websites by Green Talk

Featured in Alltop

Alltop is literally what it sound like. It is website with “all the top stories” from over 100 various blogs depending on the topic.

“You can think of an Alltop site as a “digital magazine rack” of the Internet. To be clear, Alltop sites are starting points—they are not destinations per se. The bottom line is that we are trying to enhance your online reading by both displaying stories from the sites that you’re already visiting and helping you discover sites that you didn’t know existed. In other words, our goal is the “cessation of Internet stagnation” by providing “aggregation without aggravation.”

One particular subcategory is Green which features such sites as Treehugger and World Changing. Included in that list is a group of Green Mom blogs due to the efforts of my friend, Lynn at OrganicMania. She pitched to the group over at Alltop that women represent most of the spending power in this country. If we want change in this country, we need to start with those who carries the purse strings.    Green moms spread the word on how to go green, which products to use, and which products to be wary of to millions of mothers every day.
