My in-laws grow regular potatoes and have to do the straw mound thing in their garden. They grow Yukon Gold potatoes. They are so naturally creamy and buttery all you have to do it boil them and not add anything extra to the potatoes. I once went to a French restaurant and ordered my entree based on which ones came with Yukon Gold potatoes on the side.

I have ornamental sweet potatoes in my patio baskets (the bright, lime green leaves) and they are the most predictable of my vines. They need very little watering and at the end of the year I have a crop I can harvest and replant for the next round. They do best in well drained soil to keep them from rotting.
