Save Water by Licking

Here is an eco thought.   How do you save water when baking? Lick the bowl!  I did not have to ask my kids more than once to polish off the what was left of the brownie batter.  Maybe, I got a finger full of chocolate before the troops took over.  Talk about seeing and conquering.  Arnold, the Governator, has nothing on these guys when it comes to chocolate.

(Updated 1/17/2008, thank to a reminder from  GT’s commenter Bill!) Just as a word of caution, eating raw eggs can causes Salmonella. According to Clemson University Extension, the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those stricken with chronic illness or immune disorders are more vulnerable and should not eat raw eggs.  (See here for more information on how to safely handle eggs.)

Some say that contracting Salmonella is least likely when you purchase high quality, cage-free, organically fed chicken eggs.  To be on the safe side, use the following in order to avoid using raw egg in recipes if you intend to lick:

“To make a recipe safe that specifies using eggs that aren’t cooked, heat the eggs in a liquid from the recipe over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches 160 °F. Then combine it with the other ingredients and complete the recipe.

What is a good substitute for eggs?

  • Ener-G Egg Replacer – follow directions on box.
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch = 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp arrowroot flour = 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp potato starch = 1 egg
  • 1 heaping tbsp soy powder + 2 tbsp water = 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp soy milk powder + 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water = 1 egg.
  • 1 banana = 1 egg in cakes.
  • 1 tbsp milled flax seed and 3 tbsp water = 1 egg. Light, fluffy cakes” (Adapted from Pioneerthinking.com)

I have used G-egg Replacer and found that it did not alter my bake goods.  Have you used any of the egg substitutes above? Used another substitute? Please add to the list of egg replacement substitutes.

If some of you want to take this idea a little farther and lick your plates, just go right ahead.  Good to the last drop. So, have fun this weekend with a loved one and lick instead of wash.    It ain’t easy being green, but this idea is sure a lot of fun and yummy too.  So, what eco thing do you do for fun?  No smut, people…

I am loving this! I imagine that soon (when this batch of cookies goes in the oven) I’ll have a bunch of friends in my kitchen, lining up to be environmentalists. Thanks for the giggle, and the new perspective!

Just be careful because eating raw egg may not be good for the little ones or so my wife says. Maybe she just wants to keep the bowl to herself!

I use doggy prewash. I know of nothing better than a dogs tongue to lick a pan as clean as possible. Avoid chocolate and other things that are harmful to dogs. One friend got rid of a no longer wanted relative by using doggy prewash only, and putting the licked clean dishes back in the cabinets. This was after trying many things that didn’t phase the no longer welcome relative.
