Is their a fever pitch to this message? You betcha. Our unborn children are being exposed to countless chemicals in the womb due to our industrial society. Previously, I wrote about the Enviromental Working Group’s cord blood tests that reveals over 200 toxicans in our newborns. I encourage you to read this article. It is unsettling and it should be.
In Congress right now, there is a historic bill, the Kid-Safe Chemical Act, that will change the world as we know it. Do not be mislead by the title. This bill is not just for kids. It is for everyone who will or has come in contact with chemicals in products. Unborn children are the most vulnerable because they can’t say to no to their mother’s use of a product. They are completely helpless.
What this law proposes is to prevent the rubber stamping approval of chemicals, and will require proof that they are safe for the public. New Jersey’s US Senator Frank R. Lautenberg, an 85 year old senate veteran is one of the sponsors of this bill to remove the use of toxic chemicals from our products.
How many of you suffer from a disease or have children with learning disabilities, ADD, OCD, diabetes, asthma, autism, cancer, or a host of other diseases? I don’ t think there is one person in the world who doesn’t know someone who suffers from a disability or disease. In my family of 6, four of my children have learning disabilities, two have ADD, and one has JV1 diabetes and asthma. I had ADD and my kids swear I am dyslexic. I know mothers who have died of breast cancer, children who died of brain tumors, and children with autism. Enough is enough.

I agree. I never thought about why I have asthma. Maybe it is because of unsafe chemicals being introduced to me at an early age. Makes you think; makes you want to do something about it. Regards!
Thanks Green Talk, for posting something about keeping our kids safe. I think making industrial chemicals safe for infants and children is something we can all get behind. To ensure that we really fix this problem we must include modern science language, which necessarily utilizes non-animal methods, in this bill; otherwise we’ll have another outdated bill on our hands.
Currently, many toxicity tests are based on experiments in animals and use methods that were developed as long ago as the 1930’s; they and are slow, inaccurate, open to uncertainty and manipulation, and do not adequately protect human health. These tests take anywhere from months to years, and tens of thousands to millions of dollars to perform. More importantly, the current testing paradigm has a poor record in predicting effects in humans and an even poorer record in leading to actual regulation of dangerous chemicals.
Alternatives to animal testing exist in a powerful way and many scientists advocate them. Chemical reform should not only modernize policy, but modernize the science that supports that policy. Let’s ensure Kids-Safe uses all the necessary tools to truly make our children, our environment, and animals safe.
