Mystery Weed or Amazing Flower?

mystery plant in the garden

One  of my biggest problems in my garden is I have no idea what are weeds and what are flowers.  I recall last year planting Sweet William in this particular bed but could swear that the seed package said it was an annual.

In April, this lovely plant appeared.  It does not look like Sweet William.  I have to say this is one of the prettiest weeds I have seen.  Can you see a little sign that is being held up by the plant, which says, “save this plant?”  (Look closer…)

Any ideas what this plant could be??

Absolute green, it does, doesn’t it? I think it is a dianthus and it self seeded. Time will tell when the flowers come out. I will take either! Anna

It looks like a weed to me. I always have the same problem distinguishing between the two. Maybe take a picture of it and take it to your local home and garden store and see if they know.

I couldnt help but laugh when I read this, I have the same exact situation with my garden, it is the only thing that came up by its self and I assumed from last years seeds, but part of me believes it is a weed since I have yet to see any sign of flowering…

Sweet William is a species of dianthus, so chances are you have a survivor here. Good job :)

Well, did you ever hear that…

“A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill, except for learning how to grow in a straight line!”.

Maybe, you need to great the first strain of weeds that will grow in a straight line! You will be famous and make millions trust me.

That is definitely sweetwilliam, course you probably know that now since they’ve already bloomed. They are a biennial, but they re-seed and come back every year.

I’m 90% sure it’s Sweetwilliam.

Stacey, I think so too. The sad part is it only live 2 years. I tried knocking it seeds everywhere to see if it would re-seed itself. No luck. Did I do anything wrong? Anna
