Paul, that's great. $7 a yard! Wow. I have to pay $17 a yard. Would love if you could upload some picture to Green Talk's fan page so that others can see how easy a no till garden is.
Hi Anna, Have meadow to convert to garden. I put down 1 layer of cardboard from a local winery then our local Garbage Company's Compost delivered onsite for $7/ yard.
Results were better than expected. No weeds. Great plant growth.

Absolutely. I grow in beds full of mulch, compost, and manure. It's a hot soil mix for sure, but it's very productive for basic veggies and most wildflowers (bee balm, etc).

I'm toying with the idea of going to no-till this year. Mostly because I had a bumper crop of field peas and I want to keep every ounce of saved nitrogen right where it is!

[...] Can you reuse something in another way rather than recycling it? Glass jars to store food, nails, or other items. Plastic water bottles to place in your toilet tank to reduce water usage. Cardboard and newspaper to suppress the weeds. (See my no till garden.)
MD, are you saying that it is not green to create beds without tilling? In order to create bed without tilling you have to use a lasagna method which kills the grass. The other alternatives are very damaging such as using rototillers which use gas, herbicides that kill the grass such as Round-up, and tilling the soil which upsets its natural balance. And remember in order to recycle, a lot of energy is used too to haul and then create new products with it. I see your point but I think creating vegetable and new landscape beds rather than growing water loving grass outweighs using newspaper and cardboard outweighs making new products out of recycled cardboard and newspaper.
MD, I am really confused by your comment So are you saying it is anti green to not recycle cardboard and newspaper to use it as mulch for your beds? I would rather use paper to make a bed full of natural compost than ripping up the land with a gas hogged rototiller and tilling it which destroys its natural balance. In addition, mulch does not stop weeds. Trust me. Try removing grass and then putting mulch in your new beds. Grass will spring up everywhere. Most people just resort to pesticides like Round-up, which is a horrible alternative. Anna

Lately I uploaded a new article page about no till sheet mulch gardening, lasagna gardening, after I learned that it's anti-green living in regards to off the property. Sort of made me feel more proud about having just mulched and controlled weeds all these years without the paper and cardboard.

When paper and cardboard are not recycled, it means that tons of brand new product must be manufactured. So when a bunch of gardeners keep cardboard away from the recycling pool, and lay it on their yard, they trigger heavy use of water, the use of many gallons of oil, and the discharge of sulfur dioxide into the air. Its really surprising, because most folks just enjoying their garden would have little idea what is happening elsewhere because of the product they are using. Anyhow, writing the article really helped etch the numbers in my thinking, and confirmed some suspicions I had from this past summer. Cheers, MDV / Oregon

Wow this incredible article is a must read for all home owners in Las Vegas and the entire strip. I am sure you are aware of the lawns in-front of home and in the backyards. Every household has one and I bet this article will save a lot of bucks and time for them. I am highly thankful to you for letting us know the existence of a phenomenal idea.

Mack McMillan
