Kirei Board inlaid in the Urban Woods’ Palisades dining table.
I have no idea how I found Urban Woods, a sustainable furniture maker, but was totally taken with their reclaimed wood furniture. I loved the Earthiness and simplicity of the pieces. But the Company does not stop there. They also uses nontoxic, water based stains to enhance the natural aged patina of the woods from old growth timber.
The Company prides itself that no tree was harmed in the manufacturing of their furniture, and they do not use any MDF, tropical hardwoods, or toxic glues in their manufacturing process.
“Much of the reclaimed wood was originally harvested and milled 50 to 100 years ago, and has been seasoned in sunny Southern California for decades, giving the wood unparalleled stability and resistance to future distortion or structural movement.”
Why does furniture made of reclaimed materials make environmental sense? Read the Company’s “why’s” ranging from the reduction of both the waste stream and deforestation to lower carbon impact since all furniture is made in the United States. I urge you to read the list, since it is quite interesting to learn how large of a footprint we make by simply buying new wood furniture.
Listed below are some of Urban Woods’ designs. To see the Company’s complete lines, see here. :
The Melrose credenza is pre-wired for cable and contains two shelves for your media needs and two cabinets for all electronic equipment. Measurements: 28Hx69Wx20D Retail suggested price: $1785.00.
The Wildale 7 drawer dresser is “a perfect blend of rustic and refined reclaimed wood blended together to create a unique new collection.”
Measurements: 58”w x 35”h x 22 d and suggested retail is $1750.
The Mulholland Platform Bed , which is made out of reclaimed Douglas fir, comes in the following sizes. (See accompanying retail pricing for each)
-Queen $2070.00 50Hx74Wx88L
-Eastern King $2300.00 50Hx90Wx88L

Although the previous pieces reflects a more rustic appearance, Urban Woods also creates transition/traditional lines as well. My favorite is the Sunset Collection with its tufted organic cotton bed. Looking for a more sleigh bed look, check out the Doheny Collection.
