Lafe’s Organic and Natural Deodrants: Smell Less, Be less toxic Giveaway

Lafe organic deodorant w hemp

Check out my Lafe’s natural deodorant Giveaway!

Do you smell of body odor? I know.  My sister had to tell me that my crystal was not working.  So, Lift up your arm and take a whiff.  Pleasant or nasty? (You can be the judge on this one.)  So what is an Earth lov’in gal or guy who wants to smell BO free to do? Lafe’s Natural and Organic Deodorants can fix all of that.  But how you wonder?  See how I became an enlightened smell-free  human, grasshopper.  (I know. You are waiting with bated breath.)

My introduction to deodorant started with a blue Secret roll on. How many of you used Secret when you were younger? It was the deodorant du jour for many of us.  All of a sudden in my twenties, it seemed that the  newspapers were abound with stories that aluminum caused  Alzheimer.  And guess what contains aluminum? Deodorant. I immediately switched to a crystal rock (not to be confused with a pet rock.)   Although the jury is still out on whether aluminum contributes to Alzheimer, I continued to stick with my crystal until that fateful day when my sister leaned over to me and said, “whatever you are using, it is not working.  You smell.”  Only a sister who loves you and has a strong sense of smell can tell you this tragic news.

I wasn’t the only one in the house that was complaining about smelling.  One teenage boy used  a crystal to stop the smell and arrow root to stop the wetness.  The other used another eco-deodorant roll on product. Why would boys care? Teenage girls do not like boys who smell. They begged me to  find another alternative.

It must be deodorant karma, but not long  after that I received an email from Lafe’s to try their environmentally, nontoxic deodorant. What piqued my interest?   Since 1992, Lafe has made healthier alternatives to antiperspirants and re-branded its line in 2008 in which12 out of their 22 varieties of deodorants are more than 70 percent USDA NOP (National Organic Program) certified organic.  The other products include their glycerin-based twist sticks (with 97 percent natural ingredients) and deodorant stones made from mineral salts.

What makes their products different than antiperspirants is  that their deodorants contain natural ingredients such as mineral salts, which eliminates bacteria that cause body odor, baking soda and organic ingredients such as hemp oil, aloe vera and essential oils. The Company stressed that their deodorant will not block up your pores to stop wetness like  antiperspirants, believing it is as unhealthy for your body to be prevented from releasing toxins.

More importantly, Lafe’s deodorants do not contain any parabens, propylene glycol, synthetic preservatives, artificial fragrances, or petroleum-based chemicals.

What is the significance of parabens in deodorant? A 2003 study by Darbe revealed that parabens in deodorant could cause breast cancer.  However, Phillip Harvey, et all clarified Darbe’s research that there may be a link, but the results do not prove  that the compounds used in deodorant caused cancer. Harvey stated that the research created  more questions,  which warrant further research. While the jury is still out, I will skip the parabens.

Lafe’s line includes:

  • Hemp roll-ons, available in five scents (active, lavender, tea tree, fresh and powder) and unscented, made with mineral salts, certified organic hemp oil, aloe vera and essential oils;
  • Hemp deodorant sticks available in five scents (same as above) and unscented; specially formulated with baking soda, certified organic hemp oil, aloe vera and essential oils; 97% natural ingredients;
  • Deodorant spray with aloe vera, available unscented, lavender scent or with MSM;
  • Crystal deodorant sticks and stones made with natural mineral salts (potassium alum); available in travel or regular size; 99% natural ingredients;
  • Peppermint oil foot spray, blending peppermint oil with aloe vera and mineral salts

I gave the  Active Hemp roll on to Mr teenage hair pits to see if it passed the smell test.  After a week, he said he did not seem to smell and offered me to take a whiff.  Although I should have for the sake of my Green Talk readers, I politely declined.  (I am sure you all can understand. If not, tough. )  Even my other son was happy.  Since then we have all switched to become Active Hemp Rollers! (Doesn’t that sound kind of religious?)

Why did I not choose one of the other types? I personally don’t like scents.  Like my sister, I was born with a powerful smeller.  In addition, the Active Lafe’s Active deodorant seemed like the right choice for my boys.  (Teenage boys smell awful. Worse than a dog who rolled in fish.  Well, maybe the same.)

So, readers have you taken the whiff test? If you smell bad or just want to switch to a healthier deodorant solution, you can buy any one of the above deodorants on the Company’s website at a cost of  $7.99 for a 3 ounce bottle.  (However,  my husband found it on sale on  Vitacost  for $3.76) While you are on the site, check out their baby and lubricating products.

The Company is so confident about their deodorant that they are giving away three deodorants to three lucky Green Talk readers.  Each winner gets to choose which type he or she wants. Here are the rules:

  • You must be over 18 and live in the US.
  • Leave me a comment here telling me about a time when you were perspiring when you wish your weren’t or worried that you smelled of body odor. (Come on.  How embarrassing is it that your sister told you that you smelled?)   If you don’t have one, just say so.
  • To double your chances consider joining my Feedburner email list or subscribe to my RSS feed. Both subscriptions are listed on the upper right hand column. Be sure to come back and leave a separate additional comment to tell me which one you joined. If you are already a member, just say so.
  • To triple  your chances of winning, twitter about this contest and come back and leave a separate additional comment of the url (weblink) of your twitter comment.
  • You must enter by October  9, 2009 6 PM EST time to win. A winner will be chosen at random on Monday, October 12, 2009.  Good Luck everyone!

When I was young I took ballet classes and the activity made me sweat. I didn’t like the way I smelled afterward.

When I was on the way to meet my wife’s parents, I was sweating up a storm. In all fairness, it was South Florida. You sweat there in February.

I’m trying to use more natural deoderants now that I’m pregnant, and I’m definitely having trouble finding one that works.

Of course the only way you notice that it doesn’t work is when you notice that it smells, so I’m sure I’ve had a few smelly days trying new deoderants.

Realizing that I’d forgotten deoderant as I walked to work. In the summer. In Washington DC. To my non-AC office. I think I grabbed some lavender from someone’s yard and stuck it in my pits trying to mitigate the situation.

I would love to find something that works with no aluminium.

I don’t remember stinking anytime important.

It’s inevitable that I end up with sopping underarms anytime I go in for a job interview. (Fortunately, I’ve still gotten the job, so hopefully there’s no B.O.!) But I always sweat more when I’m nervous than when I exercise. That’s life!

Most embarrassing body odor moment…when I got an anonymos note in the mail which simply said…”You have body odor. Frequent showers and regular change of clothes helps” ?!?!? I had a bacterial infection which I now believe lead to this. Even though their intentions may have been good, the wording came across as a little rude. I’m almost 40 and work at an office job. I take frequent showers and change my clothes every night and morning! Opps!

The first time I switched to a deodorant crystal. The label didn’t say, “this product doesn’t work well the first three days you use it” (works great after that!) Of course I used the crystal and wen’t to work, with my arms down by my side the whole 12 hour shift!

Had extreme reaction to work uniforms which lead to ongoing reaction in sweaty areas. HMO docs resolved nothing just said wear long underwear under the uniforms & quit using deodorants/ap (which I did for months.) Fortunately the crystal ball helps as I still have to wear the longjohns even in SoCal 90-106 temps & work an active in & outside job. Still looking for better products.

When I was a young girl of 16, I was at a friend’s brother’s wedding and wearing a brand new pink fleecy dress (so fashionable back in the 80′s). I had so much perspiration it wasn’t funny (tended to happen all the time at that age). I was standing there in the church as they came down the aisle, and armpit sweat was actually running down the side of my body, almost pouring out like water. I was mortified and desperate to get out of there. Thank goodness that doesn’t happen any more. I ended up in the rest room, wiping myself dry and clean with the hand soap! Aargh

I was at an outdoor festival and it was over 100 degrees out and all you had to do to sweat and stink was stand still. I could feel sweat just pouring down my body in the pretty new dress I just bought! My only consolation was that everyone else there was pretty much in the same position..

I regularly rode my bike to work with no thought of BO until one day, about mid-morning, I leaned into a co-workers office and leaned my arm on the door jamb. I was horrified to realize that odor was coming from me and wondered if it was just a fluke this day or if it had always been like that. I started taking a wash cloth and soap to work and cleaned up when I arrived.

I was in 7th grade, and isn’t is awesome when you have to wear a light blue oxford shirt for choir and it shows everything? I would put that shirt on in the morning and the pits would be wet like THAT! Well, one day, we had to leave after my PE class for a show, and that just did me in. Who thinks about bringing extra deodorant to middle school? Not me. My fellow sopranos let me know the deal. boo!

If you’re looking for aluminum free deodorant (the thai deodorant crystal has ammonium alum, which is a sulfate of aluminum, any chemistry book will tell you that it’s bad for you) that actually works (not like Tom’s Maine, which also has glycerol, castor oil, and can stain your shirts), try my Jungleman All-Natural Deodorant. It’s unisex, really works, and it’s only $5.99.
http://www.junglemannaturals.com

Jungleman Deodorant is the definition of ALL-NATURAL, as it DOES NOT contain: aluminum, parabens, peroxides, alcohols, artificial colors, artificial fragrances, propylene glycol, glyceryl laurate, ascorbic acid, silica, castor oil, sodium stearate or any other crap that shouldn’t be under your pits.

My husband and I came up with our product due to my skin sensitivities and his distaste for orange armpit stains on his shirts. We also wanted to avoid any of the chemicals that are currently in standard deodorants and even some alleged “natural” ones too.

If you have any questions beyond what our webpage has answers for, please email us at: info@junglemannaturals.com
