Well, it is time again for some great green mail that I received or articles that I found.  Rounding up the list this week are articles ranging from what’s in your vaccines now that they have taken out mercury, powering airlines with nuts,  to giving old wind turbines a second life.

Mercury In Vaccines Was Replaced With Something Even MORE Toxic.

Just when you thought that children vaccines might be safer when mercury was removed from them, think again.   Read Dr. Mercola’s article about what other hideous and harmful chemicals are in your child’s vaccines.  (Note:  you will have to sign in to read his article, but it is well worth the few seconds it takes to become an email follower of his.  His articles are some of my favorites.)   According to the vaccine article:

When mercury was removed from many vaccines (except the flu vaccine) years ago, it was under the false guise that finally vaccines were now safe. What health agencies did not want you to know is that there are many other toxic additives still in vaccines, and one of them is aluminum.

Powering An Airline on a Bunch of Nuts

This article from Chemically Green documents Air New Zealand’s historical trip powered by jatropha, which is part of the mix of a biofuel.  Read on about the airlines’ progress in  investigating using biofuels as alternative fuels. Want more information on jatropha?  Head over to Gas 2.0’s site.

Great bright hope to end battle of the light bulbs

I love lighting and am very excited about attending LightFair NYC 2009 in May.  As many of GT readers know, I am extremely interested in LED technology, but the cost is still in the stratosphere.  (At the 2009 International Builder’s Show, I was told the retail cost of Progress’ and Cree’s recess LED light bulb is about $90 with a rating of 50,000 hours.  The light is comparable to a 65 watt incandescent recess light bulb.)

According to the above article written in Science and Tech section of Mail Online, Cambridge University researchers have developed a cheap LED, which produces “brilliant” light without the use of much electricity.  Costing £2 (or based upon today’s conversion rates a little less than $3.00) and with a life of 60,000 hours, this may be the answer to my dreams.  To shed some more light on this wunderkind, read on.

Postal Chief Warns of Service Cuts

According to an article in CNNMoney.com, the US Postal Service is the next victim of the economic downturn.  The Service may be forced to eliminate Saturday mail delivery due to declining revenues. Read on to see how this may affect this grand institution.

How weird will it be if Saturday service is eliminated?  How will this change impact you?  Will you seek out UPS or Fedex instead?

More Old Turbines Get a Second Wind through Remanufacturing

Even the three “Rs” apply to old wind turbines.  As the above article from NY Times’ Green Inc. blog reports due to the advancements in wind technology, older wind turbines are being replaced by more efficient ones that can do the same job as hundreds of smaller existing turbines.  Like any technology that becomes obsolete, are these old turbines bound for the metal scrap heap?  Read on about what some companies are doing to put these old wind turbines to good use.  Don’t you love ingenuity?  Thanks to Ariel Schwartz for her synopsis in her Greenbiz article, More Old Turbines Get Second Life.

On silky hair and toxic humans

Who doesn’t want beautiful hair?  Whether your hair is dry or frizzy, reaching for the conditioner bottle seems like a natural habit when you are in the shower.  Well think again as the Enviroblog reports in the above article that the Canadian government decided to place two known chemicals, D4 and D5, on its toxic substance list.  These two chemicals are in many shampoos and conditioners to ensure your hair is shiny and silky.  In addition, these two companions are in other beauty and household products as well. Read on for more information about how much trouble the D twins are in.
