In my previous article, Eco-friendly Fabrics are no longer Shrinking Violets, Part I, I listed eleven different fabric companies making sustainable fabrics for sewing, drapes, upholstery, and other home decor accessories. Shouldn’t your home scream, “I am fabulous and green!” Just in case those eleven companies were not enough for you, here is an additional fifteen other sources to obtain that one of kind textile treasure for your home.

O Eco Textiles: Two sisters that set out to prove that you could have sensual fabrics that were environmental friendly every step of the way from harvest to end product. All of the fabric collections specify why the products are environmentally friendly from their certifications to even how they are dyed. They even found a company who could produce their bamboo and denaturalize the harmful waste water used to produce it. Tremendous thought and research has been put into their collection of organic hemp, cotton, linen, bamboo and other assorted fibers.

Eco-Friendly Fabrics Are No Longer Shrinking Violets (Part I)

I have to admit I love fabric. Can you blame me? As I am folding mounds of laundry or on the treadmill, I am glued to the television set watching talent designers such as Candice Olson transform dull, outdated rooms into warm cozy rooms with fabrics that scream comfort and style. Perhaps a Better Homes and Garden magazine will be perched on a table in a waiting room tempting me with their cheery rooms oozing with great fabric and design. Yes, I have a serious addiction, but absolutely no talent to pull my own rooms together. I am like a love sick teenager who loves fabric from afar.

As much as I love fabric, I know fabric with all its beauty has a dark side. Chemicals used in the production of its colors and patterns are harmful to our environment. My sensible, environmental, nontoxic side has barred me from furnishing my home. It always reminds me, “if Al Gore builds it, the eco-fabrics will come.” Slowly but surely over the last couple of years, Al was right. Others like me started their own fabric lines and the rest of the fabric world took notice that being green is not a fad but a way of life.

Art imitating life is how I would describe Oliveira Textiles’ newly designed sustainable fabric collection. Their new series, “Ocean,” is fluid, vibrant, and graceful reminding us of Dawn Oliveira’s inspiration, the ocean, in memory of her late fisherman father, who called the sea his office. The Ocean collection can be used for drapes, pillows, and light upholstery.

Each of us has a defining moment in our lives that causes us to diverge into an unexpected path. Unfortunately, the untimely death of Dawn’s father from cancer, changed twin sisters, Dawn Oliveira and Deborah Olson’s, lives forever. This moment in time fast forwarded Dawn’s dream to start her own design company, and brought her home to Rhode Island from a successful designing fashion career in NY. As a tribute to their father, Dawn and Deborah decided to form Oliveira Textiles combining Dawn’s artistic flare with Deborah’s business acumen.
