How many of you have to “hold it” until you get home because you can’t find a bathroom or you refuse to use a public bathroom? Personally, I am a “got to go girl.” After 4 kids I am ready for adult underpants. Well, the Sit and Squat Mobile App and website is a dream come true for us frequent bathroom users and parents with small children.

This application is available all over the world through the website but is dependent on users to rate and add public restrooms to the site.

The only bad thing about this app is it is now only available for iPhones, iPads, and Blackberry users. Obviously, andriod users don’t have to go the bathroom. (See But the website said they are working on an app for the Droid. Wouldn’t you know it? I have a Droid!)

Never fear, you can text the word, “sitorsquat” to DOTCOM (328266) and follow the instructions to find the closest public restroom. Whew. That’s a relief.

Before You Say Ewww.

People rate the toliets (sometimes) and list the hours of operation. The maps contain different color toilet icons.

Green means it is open.

Red means the bathroom is closed at the time of day you are searching

Yellow/Orange means the application isn’t sure of the hours of operation.

Blue means you click a particular toilet. It changes back to one of the above colors.

Should I Squat or Sit?

You must be wondering, how do I know when I should sit or squat? The website states the rule of thumb is if the toilet has a 2.5 star or above rating, you can sit. If you feel the rating of the toliet was an exaggeration, rate the toliet. This makes the program more accurate.

Disclaimer About Squatting

However, the website warns it isn’t best to squat when you are intoxicated, tired, or carrying heavy objects. (Did their lawyers tell them to put in this disclaimer? )

Social Share Your Toilet Comment

When I looked at a typical toilet description, the format reminds me of Amazon’s description. I loved all the comments, especially for us discerning toilets types. Note, you can add your comment about toilet as well as stumble, digg, and share this information. Toilet talk. How fun! In fact, if you find a new toilet, you can add it to the application. Doing your business is serious.

How Can Businesses Team with the Squat Team?

I couldn’t figure out how they were making money on this application until I read their media kit. They state that over a million people have used their app since its inception.

So, if you want to get into the toilet time biz, a business can advertise on a toilet description, or sponsors an ad. Alternatively, a business can white label the application for their site. (See National Association for Continence’s site.) In addition, developers can use the SitorSquat API based upon the Company’s guidelines.

Just so you know, this site is backed by Proctor and Gamble.

Here is the sad truth. When you go on vacation, you might as well leave your environmental side at home. Otherwise, you will be stressed to the gills. Trust me. I know.

Recently, we spent the week in a vacation resort area of South Carolina. I fought the good fight for a week and lost. Three Rs were more like relax, revive, and replenish. The other 3 Rs? Foreign cousins.

Before, you start waving your hands and say, Anna, there are plenty of resorts that would suit your environmental palette, let me explain. My kids love Myrtle Beach. Mini Golf, the beach, and ice cream galore. Do kids need anything else? Now, I am not just wagging my finger at Myrtle Beach. I bet there are other resort areas that suffer from the same problems that I list below.

Read on and let me know how you are able to keep your environmental sanity on vacation.

Plastic Binge Shopping

Propel Plastic Bottle Purchases

Beggars can’t be choosy when it comes to buying food in resort areas. We as a family of six increased the market share price of plastic stocks for the week. Worse yet, we bought the unspeakable. Plastic water bottles. As hubby explained to me, he wasn’t drinking fluoridated water.

The use of fluoride in the water supply has been very controversial since fluoride is used in rat poison. Our water supply in our area of New Jersey does not contain fluoride. So which is worse in your opinion? Fluoride or estrogen and antimony leaching from the plastic water bottle?

But wait, can’t bottle water have fluoride added to it? Yep. But the FDA requires that if fluoride is added to the water, it must be listed. So check the labels.

The Bag Man Slept with Us

For some reason, we accumulated tons of plastic bags. Groceries. Runs to the pharmacy for lotion. Must needed clothes for school. You name it. There was a plastic bag. You would think we were drugged since we kept taking them.

“Sure. Hand us another plastic bag.”

I told you. My environmental side just gave up. However, she scored some victories in keep the bags out of the landfills. How? You are not going to believe this when I say this. Thank goodness for Wal-Mart. (Close your mouth. It is hard for me to say too.) WM was the only game in town that was recycling plastic bags.

Recycling? Is that Word in our Vocabulary?

I thought I was in a different country. Where was recycling? I can’t imagine the amount of paper, plastic, etc, generated from vacationers which just end up in landfills. I started hoarding my paper, plastic, and glass hoping to find a place to recycle. Yes, I became a bag lady. There were no obvious bins or areas for recycling in the resort.

At one point I asked a maintenance person and he told me they were in the trash area. However, they only took cardboard and plastic. What about paper, I inquired. He replied, “nah, we just throw it away.” Throw it away?

So, wherever we went, I would look for bins. I found bins at the local tennis court, the gym, and a mini recycling center. We even found a small bin by the trash at the resort. How small. Don’t even ask given the number of units on the floors.

As for the paper? I kept my recycled paper in a plastic bag, and brought it home to recycle.

Based upon what I know from New Jersey, hauling waste is expensive. The cost to collect recycling is so much cheaper. Is South Carolina different? Is waste removal cheap so resort owners don’t care? Or do they think it is fruitless to put out recycling bins?

Name Me the Trash Queen

Trash Accumulated on Vacation

I am ashamed at the amount of trash we produced despite my efforts to recycle. Leftover food, peels, tea bags, plastic which couldn’t be recycled, etc. You won’t believe how hard it was for me to throw away peels, egg shells, and tea bags. My garden loves this but hubby would never have agreed to take it home.

Advice?

Local NC Farmers Market

Okay. First take a deep breath. My suggestions?

Try and buy consciously as you can. This means, if you can buy less plastic laden products do. If not, do the best you can.

Bring and use your reusable bags if you can. If not, find out if the grocery stores take back the bags. Wal-Mart does.

Ask at your resort how you recycle. If they can’t tell you, then call the Town Hall.

Don’t rely on buying eco friendly products where you are going. They may be hard to find so make sure you bring what you need.

If you are a vegetarian or vegan, check out UrbanSpoon or Happy Cow for restaurant listings that serve vegetarian or vegan food. Realize that vegetarian food to some restaurants are meals made with cheese and bread. I checked all the menus before we dined at a restaurant.

If organic fruits and vegetables aren’t available, try and source locally and ask the farmer if he or she uses pesticides. If all else fails, avoid the dirty dozens fruits and vegetables.

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

On the way back from North Carolina to New Jersey, my husband really wanted to visit Luray Caverns in Virginia. Our trip from North Carolina to New Jersey was easily a 12 hour drive without stops. No one in the car really wanted to visit the caverns and just wanted to get home. There would had to have been a tornado right by the caverns to dissuade my husband from seeing them. So, my kids grumbled into the museum expecting to be bored to tears . (Not a pretty sight. Honestly, I thought I would be bored too.)

We were all given hand held small tape recorders for our self-guided tour. Once, you are in the caverns, it is hard not be amazed at Mother Earth’s handiwork. It is one of the most beautiful, solemn places I have ever visited.

During the guided tour, one of the speakers mentioned how clean the air is and most people with sinus conditions do not have any problems in the caverns. In fact, a house was built above the caverns, and air was pumped into the house as air conditioning. My son turned to us, who normally breathes through his mouth, and exclaimed that he could breath. Mind you, this is a child when he breathes you think you are near an 80 year old man. He is always stuffed up.

I took lots of picture while I was there that I would like to share with you. Unfortunately, I may not be able to tell you what you are looking at since I did not take notes while I took the pictures. Just admire the beauty. Words like “stalactite” and “stalagmite” formations were words that were often repeated but to be honest, I don’t remember which ones were which. Readers, if you know, chime in.

If I recall, the bottom part of the picture is a pool of water reflecting the top of the cavern.

The formations play music. It is hard to see, but look at the small mallet near the top of the formation. There are mallets like this on many of the formations tied to an organ. As the mallet hits the formation, a sound is emitted. Due to the careful placement of mallets, a beautiful song is played. To see a professional picture of the organ in the great hall, see here.

Throughout the caverns, there are structures similar to this. It may be the bottom half of the double column which is 47 feet tall. To see a better picture here.

.

These formations resemble drapes with their smooth lines.

This is known as the “fried eggs” formation.

There is a wishing well in the Caverns which is full of money. Every year, the staff donates the money to charity. The above sign shows visitors where the money has been donated.

The green haze is from the pennies in the water.

I would highly recommend visiting the Caverns if you are near Virginia. For more information about the Caverns, see here.

The Shenandoah Valley, where the Caverns are located, is absolutely breath-taking. Makes you want to stop to realize just how beautiful this world really is.Similar Posts:

Photo of the some of the unhappy dwarfs at CHEJ

The other day I caught a glimpse of a television ad featuring young children wishing for a Disney World vacation with the slogan that now there are affordable trips to meet everyone’s budgets. With Christmas vacation fastly approaching, how many parents will crunch the numbers to see if they can afford this type of Magical vacation? It is a paradise for children and a place where adults can re-live their youth.

Is Disney looking out for our little ones best interest when it comes to how they keep the park, restaurants, and hotels clean? According to the Center of Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ), Disney’s green cleaning policies are causing the seven dwarfs to be more grumpy, sneezing, and sleepy than usual. For the last two years, CHEJ through its Disney Go Green! Campaign has been urging the Walt Disney Company, whose main clients are children, to reconsider their toxic green cleaning purchasing policies and implement staff green cleaning training to ensure proper use of the products for their parks, hotels, and restaurants. Such policy changes have however, been instituted in the Animal Kingdom to protect the animals.

CHEJ has urged overall changes to Disney’s cleaning policies. (See the correspondences between the companies.) However, Disney asserts that they are using green seal certified cleaners. So, what can you do? The CHEJ urges you to take action as follows:

“Who Put Goofy in Charge of Purchasing?

Recently, the Center for Health, Environment and Justice found that Disney World uses 12 certified green products, and over 80 very toxic cleaners. So what’s the deal? Animals’ sensitivities to chemicals have them avoiding toxics in their Animal Kingdom theme park. Apparently green cleaners are for the birds (and the lions and the tigers and the bears – oh my!) But then where are the toxic cleaners used? They are used where visiting children bathe, eat and play.

Now is the time to call on Disney World to Go Green! Community groups in Florida are joining together to move Disney towards safer cleaning products, but you can get involved! Disney cares most about impressing its visitors!

Get Goofy to Smarten Up! Here’s how you can help:

Send an e-mail to Disney

Join in the fun! Download or order materials to hand out at Earth Day or other events and help spread the word.

Write your own letter to Disney, or have children write letters to them. Write to:

Take these few steps to make Disney take one great leap – switching to green cleaning products and procedures and becoming a leader in the hotel and tourism industries!”

In addition, the CHEJ suggested hosting a green cleaning party to create awareness of the toxic chemicals we use in our home to keep it sparkling clean. Here are so resources to assist you in this endeavor:

Even if you are not planning a trip to Disney or do not have children, it take a village to raise a child. Let’s protect them for one day they will taking care of us.

What I love about visiting colleges is that I get to see so many different towns. For years, I have heard about Ithaca, New York because of the famous restaurant, Moosewood. This restaurant is known for its inspiring vegetarian and fish cookbooks. I have one of the Moosewood cookbooks and I must say, every recipe in the book is fantastic.

When we decided to take my oldest to see Cornell, I knew that at long last I would get to eat at my beloved Moosewood. I also heard that Cornell’s campus is one of the prettiest in the country. So, this trip was going to be a treat.

What I did not realize is that Ithaca is uber-green not only in the nature sense with its beautiful gorges but in the way of life offered by the town. It has a hippy feel to it as if time has stood still.

Pictured above is one of the parts of the gorges. We visited two. The first gorge we went to had a beautiful waterfall where water cascaded over rocks at the bottom of the pool. My kids thought they could go swimming in the water but it was too cold for their taste.

The second gorge we went to was adjacent to the Cornell campus. We hiked up endless plateaus of small waterfalls passing along the way people just enjoying the beauty. This gorge just drew you in asking you to sit awhile and reflect on life rather than hurrying through your day. I was astonished that the steps and paths were maintained so well, especially given the rough winters that Ithaca has. For more information about nature exploration in Ithaca, click here.

Our next stop was The Commons, which is a centralized shopping area in the middle of town, containing many green shops.
In addition, there were a couple of vintage stores which I can never resist. Second Time Around carries gently used and new clothing items. Loose Threads carries affordable funky new clothing on their first floor and vintage clothing on their second floor.

Race Office Supply and Variety offered the convenience of all of your green office needs in one place. I went into the store hoping to find binders for my children for back to school. They sell recycled content notebooks and Rebinder Recycled binders made out of corrugated cardboard. (The concept behind this notebook is that you can replace your cover when its life is over with a new cover and recycle the old shell.) However, the Rebinder binders were priced at $11 for a 2” binder. The price was a little high for me, especially since I have four kids with multiple binder needs. If you are interested in buying these binders in bulk, check out the Sustainable Group Products where you can buy them for half the price.

In addition, the store offers art supplies and beauty products as well. It reminded me of the old mom and pop stores that I used to visit as a kid.

To top it all off, there was Home Green Home, a green home furnishing and accessory store. I went into the store hoping to find my decomposable compost bags. Unfortunately, they did not carry them. However, the store offers paint, home furnishings from such designers as Cisco Brothers, table ware, blankets, towels and other items. What a great place.

I am not a prude but I have to mention my shock of finding two stores that carried beautiful glass smoking paraphernalia. They looked like bongs to me. I went to the University of Florida which is the home of Gainesville green, but it was so open and in your face. I even asked a local about this and she explained that it is quite common for weed smoking from college kids to older adults in their sixties. I guess this adds to the green of Ithaca?

That night I ate at Moosewood and had a delicious Mediterranean appetizer and a veggie stew for dinner. The stew needed more spice so I was a little disappointed, but I am glad I was able to finally eat at the restaurant. And what better way to top off a meal. Yep, ice cream. The locals told me to go to Purity Ice Cream, an ice cream place that makes all their products from locally made products. Somebody pinch me. I can’t eat ice cream but my kids really enjoyed the ice cream.

What I loved about Ithaca is that being sustainable is a way of life not a marketing tool. When we ate at Collegetown Bagels, I was told that most of the bagels were made from organic products. Nothing was labeled that this particular bagel was organic and others were not. It just was expected. I can’t eat bagels since they make me fall asleep. Instead, I ate a tofu scrambled omelet. It was different and kept me filled up until lunch.

Recycling is amazing in Ithaca. At the bagel shop, there were the usual recycling bins (glass, aluminum, etc.). In addition, there were bins for compostable plates and utensils, and food. In this town, I was told by another local, that you are fined if you do not recycle. My kind of town.

It was refreshing to have the hotel take my plastic bottles and recycle them for me. The hardest part of the college trips is not being able to recycle anything. Rest stops do not have recycling. Hotels and restaurants do not have recycling. Only the college campuses seem to have bins.

My son had two campus tours planned. So, during the second one I went with my younger ones to visit the Cornell gardens. What a treat. (I had to bribe them with home made ice cream made right on the campus from local dairy farms.) We looked at their vegetable garden that makes my garden look quite small, a perennial garden, and a shrub and tree garden. I am so obsessed with gardening that I called home and left messages on my machine as to the plants I loved.

Pictured above is a Chinese Chive Plant. It is on my must have list.

After we left Cornell, I wanted to find organic dog biscuits for the bar mitzvah. My son’s bar mitzvah project was helping to take care of an elderly person’s dog. We were going to place dog biscuits on the luncheon tables to be donated to a shelter. I figured some place in Ithaca would have the dog biscuits.

Again I asked a local and she suggested Wal-Mart. You could have just knocked me off my seat. Wal-Mart, I questioned. No way, as I shook my head. The local woman said to me that I needed to understand that Ithaca is very green and they will have a lot of green products. Putting my doubts aside, we went to Wal-Mart.

Sure enough, there was Newman’s organic dog treats right in the dog aisle. This was one big green store. Why can’t Wal-Mart offer these green products in their other stores? Affordable green. Do any of you have a green Wal-Mart where you live?

For a small town, I noticed a lot of homeless people. A local told me that the homeless people like Ithaca because the college students are more sympathetic to them. Plus, the town is very liberal.

What was my son’s assessment of Ithaca? He loved the academics at Cornell but Ithaca is in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do. Plus, it gets really cold. He prefers a city rather than a college town. So, unless I go to visit again myself, I won’t be traveling to Ithaca anytime soon. I am sure if I do, the town will be the same since it seems like it is the town time forgot but so much farther ahead on the green curve.

See my 3 Rs dress show below!

This summer we are visiting colleges, and have seen about 9 colleges. If you have little ones, the years go by really fast. It seemed like yesterday when he was walking to now he is going to be off on his own. (A tear streaming down my face and my other children yelling hooray, he’s gone.)

This is my first child going off to college, so he gets to see every college his heart desires except Stanford because it is too far. Kind of like the first child has the most pictures and the last one has none because you can’t find your camera by then. So by the time we get to number 4, his oldest brother can take him. (Just kidding….maybe.)

It is amazing to go back and visit college and see how diverse the curriculum has become. Makes me wish I could be a college student again.

Our last road trip was to Washington DC to see Georgetown and George Washington University where I spotted lots of green (see my picture article.) This time we went to Chicago. I have been there a couple of times, but never in the summer.

The City took my breathe away with its amazing floral displays and lush green areas. It has many beautiful parks, and I was impressed with the lack of development near Lake Michigan. No looming condo towers blocking out the beautiful Lake. And the city was SO clean and perfectly coiffed. Mind you I was only downtown and at Northwestern and University of Chicago.

One of the student who helped with one of the college tours mentioned that Chicagoans have amazing civic pride. It shows.

During one of our nightly strolls, I could not help and take pictures of Chicago showing off its green with the help of some amazingly creative designers who made fashion statements out of recycled materials. Check out my trip down recycled U:

My favorite one of the show is this dress entitled “Hotel Keyture.”

So, which one is your favorite and why? Do you make products or crafts out of recycled materials?

Over the weekend, we were in Washington DC looking at colleges for my oldest. We decided to make Washington a family weekend trip while we visited Georgetown and George Washington. Of course, I always have my trusty camera to capture the greening of America as I travel. Here are some of the green finds I found in the Nation’s capital:

I saw this sign near the grass right by the Lincoln Memorial. I have a fascination with Buffalo grass and have always wondered how it would fare in New Jersey. (I know, an odd thing to have a fascination about.) It is supposed to be drought tolerant. Does anyone have Buffalo grass? Is it like fescue grass?

Here is a picture of the Buffalo grass that I took as it was just getting dark. It looks like regular grass to me but I tried to reach over to touch it. I sure the security guards at the memorial were wondering what I was doing.

I think this is an electric car for the park service to tool around in. I walked around it looking for a the gas tank but could not find it. It says “E4″ on it. Does anyone know?

These recycle bins were in the subway. I don’t recall seeing newspaper recycling bins in the NYC subways. (Anyone, correct me if I am wrong about this.) I like this idea since so many people read the newspaper while traveling on the subway. Now, instead of putting the newspapers in the trash, you can put in it in these containers.

I was really impressed with the DC subways. They were so clean and cool on a very humid night. When I have been in the NYC subways in the summer, it can be very hot.

If you live in a big city, you probably have seen buses like this bus. If anyone knows of a private bus service in NJ that uses natural gas or a hybrid, let me know.

On this note regarding the buses, I have never seen a hybrid taxi before. Is this common in your city? This cab driver must have thought I was completely crazy to take a picture of the side of his taxi.

Great Vintage store in the Georgetown Area. The owner told me that there is a store in Las Vegas and this store in DC. She has both new and old clothes. She told me that they are very careful as to what they select to make sure it is in excellent condition. I picked out a vintage green 1950′s dress but did not have time to try it on. The owner assured me that they would have a website soon so you can buy online. Do you have a favorite vintage store in your city?

I passed by Tugooh Toys, an eco-friendly toy store located in the Georgetown area. Unfortunately, it was closed when I took the picture. The banner in the window reads as follows: “Save what’s left. Go Green!” Check out Hannah Schardt’s story, “Safe and Sound Toys” in the Washington Post (September, 2007) with a blurb about this store.

I was dying to check out Sweet Green, a yogurt and organic salads place in Georgetown.
My husband ordered their plain fozen yogurt ice cream with a topping. (It is not organic.) It had a unique authentic yogurt taste just like plain yogurt. He enjoyed the tart taste. (See picture to the right.)

The store is the real green deal in trendy Georgetown with their compostable utensils as well as their menu printed on plantable paper.

I got my first close encounter (of the first kind) with a BigBelly solar trash can. On the trash can, it says it can hold enough trash to reduce the amount of trash collections by 4 times. The solar panel is on top of the trash can. (See picture to the right.)

Unfortuneately, some people did not put their garbage in the trash can and the recycling can was overflowing with recyclables.

This Georgetown University building’s solar panels were installed in the 1970s during the oil crisis. Today, those solar panels are still work horses pumping out 30% of the energy needed for the building. I like how the solar panels are integrated into the design.

What I liked about DC is the number of small parks and lush landscape. Many times I was told to “hurry up” since I was literally smelling the roses. I did not recognize some of these plants and hope you can tell me what they are. What is the dark purple plant and the small pink ground cover?

I love these red plants. They are all over DC. What are they? Does anyone know if the deer like them?

These trees were all over DC. Some had big red flowers. This one seems to have berries.

Pink Salvia? Anyone know its name?

Please add to this post as to other green aspects of Washington DC. What is your favorite place to visit while you are there?

Is there a green aspect in your city you would like to highlight? You never know. I might be visiting there looking at colleges. I have three more kids to go.

My first question when I was asked to preview this magazine was what other ways has Delta contributed to helping our global crisis? The company’s spokeswoman cited many ongoing initiatives, but I will highlight just a few notable ones.

In 2007, Delta partnered with The Conservation Fund and is the first airline to offer its customers the opportunity to offset their carbon emissions from air travel by donating to the Conservation Fund with every online ticket purchase.

For decades, Delta has invested heavily in developing ways to reduce overall fuel consumption, which include single-engine taxi, reduced aircraft weights, and improved flight routings. In 2006, these measures have led to savings of more than 25 million gallons of fuel.

In June 2007 Delta launched a comprehensive onboard recycling program which resulted in the diversion of more than 150 tons of onboard waste from going into landfills.
