I just received an invitation to join a facebook group called “Green by Design.” This group is for all of us who love green architecture or interior design.  For those readers who do  not know my obsession with green design, I love fabric and furniture and written about here and here

On the site was this terrific video presented by the Resource Design Lab created by FRCH Design Worldwide to inspire interior designers to go green with some great products. (The Resource Design Lab is a blog featuring the latest news on design products and trends as well as resource for FRCH Design Worldwide employees. FRCH is a commerical design firm.)

Help! Slugs in my Garden are Ruining My Life!

I Hate Slugs!

Why do I hate Slugs? They are vile, ugly, slimy, gross, disgusting, and did I say vile? I wrote this slug article last August and put it away since it did not seem as pertinent at the end of summer. Guess what? Baby slugs have returned this June. AND you know what that means? Giant zombie slugs by summer’s end! They were at least 4 inches last summer. I swear.

Slugs. Even the name is not pretty, and nor is the creature. Slugs like moist environments. Being a younger gardener, I have never heard of them. The master gardeners warned me that all that straw I was using as mulch would attract them. Being defiant I wanted to keep my straw. Every organic book I read talked about using 6 to 8 inches of straw as mulch. I decided they were not “organic” enough. They obviously did not read Mother Earth news’ article about Ruth Stout, the mulch queen, who used straw. I just blew off their comments.

GleenGlass Creates Functional “Good for the Earth” Art for your Home

GleenGlass offers one of a kind recycled art inspired glass countertops, vessels, architectural elements such as front door inserts, and tile with that Zen Asian/Spartan feel. I was most struck by how gorgeous the vessels were and wanted to rip out my powder room sink and replace it with one of GleenGlass’. Even the glass countertops were sleek and modern.

Before I write an article about a product, I like to read the website to gleam as much information as I can about the company. Most importantly, I pay particular attention to the “about” page as to why the founders have created this product. I found the “why” of the founder and principal, John Sauer’s intriguing because it illustrated how his own journey has come full circle, like his vessels. He has created harmony in life by reclaiming what was no longer usable into something new and useful.

Ella Vickers Recycles Discarded Sails into Fashionable Bags

Ella Vickers at the Go Green Expo displaying her recycled sailcloth bag line. (Check out the product discount below!)

Who would have thought that old sails could be recycled to become fashionable and practical totes and bags? Well, in 1989 the idea was born when Ella Vickers, a first mate on the Columbia sailing yacht, which raced in the America cup, decided to make bags out of the discard sails. Everyone wanted two or three of the bags and the rest shall we say, was sailing history.

Since then, the Company, Nauti Gear, has expanded to include multiple products ranging from bags, accessories, to décor items made out of either white Dacron cruising or Kevar/Mylar racing sailcloth. Not only are the bags fashionable, they are durable and water resistant.

Isn’t this chair great?  Special Discount Offered to Green Talk Readers!

As the Editor of Green Talk, I receive endless emails from companies asking me to write about their products. Although you may think that this can be overwhelming, I am the fortunate one since I get to meet some amazingly passionate people along the way.

A month ago, I was privileged to spend time with Lori Jacobsen, co-owner of The Repurposed Home. Lori is an interior designer who has started this Company with her daughter, Katie, to take furniture and accessories bound for the trash and repurpose them into fabulous to die for pieces.
