Another garden season is almost upon us, and are you feeling a mix of excitement coupled with dread from the lackluster or not so great harvest of last year? Or years past? Been there. So, four years, ago, I got smart and started to garden vertically. Gardener to gardener, I want to share my 3 favorite vertical gardening tools in a free mini e-course.
Why?
Because I doubled my harvest. You can too. I know you too will fall in love with vertical gardening. Think how will it feel to be happy with your gardening season?
As I mentioned above, with vertical gardening, my productivity increased dramatically, and my anxiety decreased significantly.
A win, win situation don’t you think?
Now I am not going to lie.
The animal kingdom of pests and critters will still be there anticipating your every move.
They want what you grow. Plain and simple.
Make enough to share with them so the disappointment doesn’t eat you alive.
Okay, so they won’t eat you alive.
Gardening Can Be So Frustrating!
If you have been following Green Talk, you will know that I have been gardening for eleven years. I am not ashamed to say I have probably made more mistakes than you can count on the hands of your 50 closest friends.
(Okay 100 closest friends, but who is counting?)
I am not kidding.
But I hate being frustrated. It is like the time when I tried to strip an antique chandelier with eco-stripper. (Someone painted it bright gold. So 1980.) No matter how hard I tried, more paint seems to magically appear. There seem to be endless layers of paint. I finally gave up because I was so frustrated.
So, I feel your pain when you try so hard and gardening gets so frustrating.
Now I Come Prepared Armed with Vertical Gardening Tools:
So whatever Mother Earth throws at me–pests, critters, and _____(fill in the blank,) I vertical garden. So I win part of the battle.
I am not promising you rainbows and unicorn gardening. Gardening is an art. Every year brings new surprises.
I am just trying to level the playing field.
So why have I won?
- No more twisting my ankle falling all over my vines since my garden was an obstacle course for a triathlete. My beans, peas, watermelon, melon, cucumbers, squashes and pumpkins are off the ground.
- Since my vines are off the ground, those critters can’t eat most of my lovely squashes and melons. Critter + eating my hard earned vegetable= Frustration, exasperation, and certain explicit words that youngsters shouldn’t hear.
- I have become an ultimate bug hunter. Now, I can look under the leaves to see Mr. Squash bug’s eggs at eye level instead of stooping down and flipping over all the leaves. It is so time consuming and stooping hurts my back. ( I ain’t getting any younger…)
- Oh and the list goes on. I can kvell (Yiddish word for gush) about why I love vertical gardening so much but I know you get the picture.
But the real pleasure is…
Wait for it– doubling the harvest.
Or for those of you keeping up with the Jones’ garden–you know who you are.
The ultimate bragging rights for best harvest from your vine plants!
{Are you nodding your head?}

We took our garden vertical this last year too and I was SO excited! Then, for some unknown reason, our garden TANKED and I had the worst production year out of my 8 years of gardening. It was pretty heartbreaking. But I’ll be enriching the soil and getting my starts going soon in hopes that those vertical fences are filled with a bounty this summer!

Kelsey, check out the free mini course so you can see what I use. I don’t use a fence. Anna

I would love to do vertical gardening at some point. We’re limited with what we can do since we rent, but this seems like a great possible option. Lovely photos too Anna!
