I normally don’t write such strong titles as the one I wrote for Gardasil. However, when you hear multiple reports of young girls dying or no longer able to resume their normal lives because of a blasted vaccine that is making a pharmacerical company rich, it makes me very angry. Watch the above video and you will get as heated as I am right now. Okay, let me take a breath and explain what all the fuss is about.
Gardasil is a vaccine created by Merck given to young women to help prevent cervical cancer. It is intended to prevent 4 different human papillavirus strains from causing cervical cancer. Apparently, according to Merck, these four strains account for 70% of cervical cancer cases. Women and girls from ages 9-28 are give three rounds of vaccinations. If you contract another type of cervical cancer causing virus, this vaccine will not help you.
You may have seen the above Gardasil commerical. The one the says “I want to be one less” referring to being one less woman dying of cervical cancer. It tugs at your heart strings, and makes you want to run out and vaccinate your daughters. (Update: And your boys.) What they don’t tell you in the commerical, is about all the debilating side effects and deaths that have resulted from this vaccine.
NVIC’s latest Gardasil risk report comparing the number and severity of adverse events reported to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) through November 30, 2008, reveals that death and serious health problems such as stroke, blood clots, cardiac arrest, seizures, fainting, lupus and rechallenge cases are reported three to 30 times more frequently after Gardasil vaccination than after meningococcal (Menactra) vaccination.
In real numbers, as revealed on the CBS video, there were 5021 Gardasil ER visits compared to 1667 Menactra ER visits and 29 deaths allegedly caused by Gardasil. The FDA, CDC, and Merck state that the benefits outweigh the risks. Did everyone at the CDC and the FDA flunk math in high school? Gardasil has THREE times the incidents as Menactra, a drug that also given to young people.
According to the NVIC e-newletter I received,
Today NVIC launched a and issued a national press release calling on President Barack Obama, his Administration and Congress to investigate the fast track licensure and universal use recommendation of Gardasil in 2006 and the dismissal of more than 10,000 reports of Gardasil-related reactions, injuries and deaths to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) as a “coincidence” by federal health officials.
Please sign this petition, if you are as outraged as I am. NVIC further states,
Gardasil vaccine was inappropriately fast tracked and licensed by the FDA and recommended by the CDC with too little attention paid to the reports of brain and immune system dysfunction that developed after vaccination in pre-licensure clinical trials. That same cavalier attitude toward Gardasil-related deaths and serious health problems, which have been experienced by many girls and young women after licensure, is inexcusable.
It was reported that the vaccine may available for boys, who transmit the cancer causing viruses to girls. Sure. Let’s double the amount of vaccine injuries. (Update: The vaccine is available to boys now.) Heck, it is only our young ones that are being effected.
President Obama, please fire everyone at the FDA and CDC and wipe the slant clean. “I want want to be one less” should mean I want to be one less woman to receive this hideous vaccination. Go back to the drawing board and do it right this time.
Update: 12/24/2011: Thanks to Sarah at the Healthy Home Economist for sharing this link of this peer reviewed article, ” Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine policy and evidence-based medicine: Are they at odds?” Key take aways are listed on the first page. The one that struck me was a follows:
“Current worldwide HPV immunization practices with either of the two HPV vaccines appear to be neither justified by long-term health benefi ts nor economically viable, nor is there any evidence that HPV vaccination (even if proven eff ective against cervical cancer) would reduce the rate of cervical cancer beyond what Pap screening has already achieved.”
