Green Crawler’s Relaunch, Better Online Green Product Shopping Experience

April 25, 2009 By: Anna4 Comments

Green Crawler, a green online shopping website

Almost two years ago I interviewed Ryan Lewis, CEO of  Green Crawler, about the Company’s unique online green shopping website.  Recently, I received an email from him telling me about the Company’s relaunch of the website and their growth over the last two years.   So, what is Green Crawler?

“Green Crawler is an innovative online shopping database of green, organic, natural, eco-friendly, environmental friendly, energy efficient products, providing savvy online shoppers with an in depth catalog of green alternatives. Shoppers can browse a wide variety of products that contribute to the reduction of their carbon footprint, including household cleaners, personal care items, appliances, cosmetics and beauty items, household items, apparel, lawn and landscaping items, furniture, etc.”

At the time when I first wrote about the Company, they had only about 1500 plus  personal care products listed on the site.  In addition, green product vendors had to upload their products via an excel spreadsheet template.  A little cumbersome.

Like many companies that evolved, Green Crawler is no longer crawling. It is leaping.  With over 12,000 green products on their site ranging form personal care to household products, it is truly a one stop shopping destination.

“Green Crawler’s idea is simple,” said Ryan Lewis, CEO and Founder of Green Crawler. “Unlike generalized comparison-shopping engines like PriceGrabber.com, or large databases of products like Google Base, visitors will be using Green Crawler for one reason – to shop green. It will be a great place for green merchants to market their products, and a great place for shoppers to locate green products without rummaging through thousands of irrelevant products.”

One of the beauties of Green Crawler was that vendors could upload their products to the database although in an little more time consuming manner.

“In order to eventually become the largest green product database on the web, we need to offer an easy, efficient product submission process for our merchants,” said Jacob Morris, CIO and Co-Founder of Green Crawler.

Ryan futher explains:

“The new site features a new product submission process for merchants, allowing them to submit their data feeds (RSS 2.0 or XML) instead of a manual Excel template.  The new process uses the same specifications as Google Base, so that our merchants can submit to Google Base, and Google Base can submit to Green Crawler, without any data feed reformatting.  The new product submission process keeps all products up to date on our site, as merchants can submit their product catalogs whenever they want.  To give you an idea how effective the new product submission process is, in one week, we have added 12,000+ products from several merchants, which is a much larger database of products than the 1,500+ we featured before.

The site “look” has also been revamped, with new search results (now including images), a new logo, top searches “tag cloud” and a merchant list “tag cloud,” showing our users what stores are featured and how many products they currently have on Green Crawler.”

Merchants can upload free of charge.  With Green Crawler’s ease of search for green products, there is no reason not to buy green anymore. Check out the site, and leave some feedback here.
