I love green design. Who doesn’t? And if you are like me, you will run to the below video as Eric Corey Freed, the Organic Architect, shares his five most loved green residential design picks on Green Talk TV (move over Barbara Walters.) Note, you can listen to the podcast below instead. Trust me, design affecionados, you won’t be disappointed. Just look at the gorgeous light above.
And so you know, we aren’t talking sub-floors here.
Who Is Freed?
For those of you who don’t know Freed. Well short of sounding like his publicist (or a school girl with a crush) here is a short clip from his site:
“Eric co-developed the Sustainable Design programs at the Academy of Art University and University of California Berkeley Extension. He sits on the boards of Architects, Designers & Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR), Green Home Guide and West Coast Green, as well as the advisory boards of nearly a dozen other organizations.
He was the founding Chair of Architecture for The San Francisco Design Museum and one of the founders of ecoTECTURE: The Online Journal of Ecological Design. He is a regular contributor for Sustainable Industries Journal, Luxe, Natural Home, Metropolitan Home and dozens of other publications. Eric lectures around the country at 40+ conferences a year, and his work has been featured in Dwell, Metropolis, Town & Country, Natural Home and Newsweek. He has been seen on television on Fox News, HGTV, The Sundance Channel and PBS.
Oh, did I tell you? He is also the author of several books. His latest book is GreenSense for the Home: Rating the Real Payoff from 50 Green Home Projects.* And miraculously, he has time to sleep.
What I love about our interview is Freed’s down to earth style. No rock star attitude although you have to admit the man has an impressive resume. In the interview, you can’t help but hear his passion for great design and equally great companies.
His residential picks are (drum roll, please:)
- ModWalls Tiles. Listen to why Freed loves this company.
- Cork Mosaic Tiles: recycled wine corks make for a unique floor. Listen on how Freed likes to mix up the tiles.
- Sonoma Cast Stone Concrete Wave Sink. This sink was my favorite of his picks.
- Eleek Recycled Metal Tiles: Made from recycled aluminum.
- MioCulture Bendant Lamp: As Freed say, “it is inexpensive and gorgeous.”
Don’t miss the upcoming video of Freed’s favorite top five picks for commercial design products. Again, there is nothing boring or ho hum about Freed’s commercial picks.

Hello,
In an attempt to help foster the adoption of residential green features, I’m doing my PhD study on homeowners’ opinions of such features. I’d like your help by participating in a quick survey.
Below is the description of the study and at the bottom you’ll find the survey link. Thank you so much!
Housing and the Environment
Informed consent: The purpose of the study is to find out what are the most common residential green features. You qualify to answer the survey if you: a) own a residence (house, coop apartment, duplex, condo, mobile home, town house); AND b) have added at least one environmentally-friendly/green feature to it. Examples of green features are: fluorescent light bulbs, non-toxic paint, repurposed furniture, high efficiency heating and cooling, low flow faucets and shower heads, and double/triple insulated windows.
It is quick and will take approximately 6 minutes of your time. You will be asked to indicate which green features you have added to your home. There are also a few demographics questions and questions about your overall opinion of environmental issues and homes in general. Your participation is anonymous.
Participating in this study does not present any risks beyond those experienced in everyday life. The data will be stored and secured at the University of Missouri, Columbia, in a locked room.
Your decision to participate is voluntary. You can stop at any time. You do not have to answer questions you do not wish to answer. Refusal to take part in or withdrawing from this study will incur no penalties. If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact the researcher at mmtzd@mail.missouri.edu.
You must be 18 years of age or older to consent to participate in this study.
If you agree to participate in the study, please open the Qualtrics link below
