Ever since I meet Beth of Fake Plastic Fish, a woman who eschews plastic, who has made it her life mission to reduce her plastic consumption for both environmental and health reasons, I too had to take a hard look at my own plastic consumption. It’s not been pretty. Through her friendship and her blog, she has “introduced” me to people who share her same mission. Two such activists are Jay Sinha and Chantal Plamondon, co-founders of the online store, Life Without Plastic and their blog. (Their products are also sold in their Wakefield store in Quebec.)
I actually meet them face to face at a green expo and fell in love with their stainless steel tiffins. During my visit with both Chantal and Jay at their booth, I realized that my readers would love to hear their story. So, on a cold winter day, a Skype podcast was born. Listen to this interesting podcast as Jay explains why he sells products that offer a plastic disposable alternative to people. He is quite passionate and will make a believer out of you.
As I mentioned above, my favorite products on LWP are the Sanctus Mundo tiffins. They are made of stainless steel. As Jay explains, they are great for sandwiches, snacks, and soups (provided you keep the tiffins upright.) I have a sandwich tiffin and have used it for salad. Some of the tiffins are air tight and stackable so you could easily freeze leftovers provided you leave a small air space between the top of the tiffin and the food.
Some of my other favorite products are as follows:
A plastic free toilet bowl cleaner. Priced at $29.95.
Stainless Steel Ice Trays. Priced at $32.95. I mistakenly thought my old 1960’s ice trays that I grew up with were stainless steel. Jay corrected me. They were in fact aluminium. On the website, the Company notes,
“This ice cube tray is made of high quality food grade stainless steel 18-8. It is dishwasher safe. Please be aware that this ice cube tray has been re-constructed in stainless steel out of an old aluminum model. We suggest not using aluminum ice cube trays available on E-bay or at a garage sale as tiny particles of toxic aluminum could end up in your iced tea.”
Fun Dishes for Children. The interiors are made of stainless steel. Prices vary.
The four piece children’s wood lacquer set is absolutely gorgeous. Priced at $49.95 (on sale)
It was hard to narrow down what I loved most on the Life Without Plastic site. I kept hearing the tune from one of the songs from the Sound of Music…”these are my favorite things…” as I cruised around the site in my stainless steel car with stainless steel Ken besides me. Barbie is just way toooo plastic for my taste now.
Life Without Plastic has wonderful products so not only can you live without plastic but you can do it with style. Did I mention they have wonderful non-plastic toys as well? Or a 15 liter stainless steel water dispenser? *Sign.* I could be singing that song for a long time as I keeping finding more and more products that I like on the LWP site.
Head over and fall in love with their products. Life Without Plastic has been very generous and offered a discount of 10 % to all Green Talk readers until August 31, 2010 on their products. Use the code: GTHELLO.
Readers, let me know your favorites.

Actually, I would prefer a wax coated paper set of disposable containers. But then, the same arguement for plastic can be made for wax.. and then there is the issues of disposable paper products.

I found that even if I’ve determined not to use any plastic things, people around me never stop giving me plastic bags. Every time I go to the market to buy some food, they give me plastic bags. I can’t avoid it.

Joe Huang says
I will try to bring my own bag, however, all of others use plastic bags. It won’t help with only one person stopping using plastic bags.
