Featured on this video is my friend, Karan, aka Best of Mother Earth, guru of wellness and fellow Green Mom Carnival mom along with Tim Masters, owner of Mygreenmattress.com, at the Chicago Green Festival. Get a sneek peek of the Chicago Green Festival. Look like Karen and Tim were having a great time.
Best of all, want to know how a latex mattress is made as well as latex allergies? Check out Tim explaining it to Karen.
The verdict. Kudos to my videophobic friend, Karen and John, the videotographer. Didn’t she do great? Often times, when I do a video of me, it has to be shoot a couple of time since all my words start to fall all over each other. Odd for someone who loves to talk.
Note, the website, MyGreenMattress is not live yet but they can be reached at 1–877-737-8237.
Enjoy!

How wonderful to see Karen on film! Wow! It’s so funny how well we bloggers all feel we know each other, when in reality most of us have never even met “IRL.”
Thanks for posting this, Anna !
Chicago Eco-memory foam mattresses says
My company started flooring eco-memory foam mattresses over the last month: Back to Bed Chicago-land mattress stores.
They are made from plant-based oil versus petroleum. The covers are mostly bamboo with a little spandex. Their manufacturing is ZERO emissions. They compress the mattress from 9-12″ to 2″ and roll them up so they can ship more of them in a smaller truck. And they give us discounts on larger orders to do that.
So far there has been a huge response because they are comfortable too.
Check out ecomfortmattress.com for details.
We’ll be updating our website too soon.

David, what does eco foam mean? Is this petroleum based as well as synthetic foam. In addition, are there flame retardants in the mattress? Anna
Devin says
Every mattress is required by law to be flame retardant now.
The ECO part comes from the way the oil is created. Instead of using petroleum, plant based matter is used.
It is comparable to producing ethanol from corn, but i’m sure the process is very different.
Green Talk says
Devin, most natural latex mattress can pass flamability standards due to the use of wool in the mattress. I guess I still do not understand what makes your mattress eco. Is the oil being replaced with part soy or castor bean? Can you explain further? Anna
Eco-memory foam mattresses says
Of course, I talked to my employer to ask which plant oils are in the product.
It is part soy. The boxspring has recycled wood, paper, etc. The cover is made from Bamboo and spandex. The least expensive of the mattresses has some petroleum in the memory foam, the other two do not, the memory foam is all soy-based. There are of course other materials that go into foam besides oil.
By far the largest reason this product is eco-friendly however is because it is factory compressed and rolled up before shipping.
For every 1 Semi that ships these mattresses, roughly 5 semis would be needed for the same number of conventional innerspring mattresses. That is where the greatest reduction in our carbon footprint is achieved.
To illustrate the size of the mattress:
I work in the office and warehouse. A customer picked-up a queen size mattress in their Mini Cooper several days ago. It fit very easily.

Devin, thanks for continuing the conversation to clarify everything. I wonder how they were able to make a whole mattress soy when neither the furniture or automobile industry can not make a cushion made with over 20% soy? Any ideas? Anna

By no means are these mattresses 100% soy. Soy does replace the use of petroleum completely in two of the three mattresses we offer, but they have several other material components.

A comment on mygreenmattress.com –
I am excited to see how Quality Sleep Shop’s(store name) latex beds feel. We offered Natura natural latex products in the past, but was not successful with them because they were expensive. They have a little better prices, so If they have similiar or better quality products to Natura at those prices I would consider buying a bed from them if I were not in the industry myself.

Thanks Devin for the clarification. Anna
Mattress Chicago says
After some research in the manufacturing of Latex and memory foam beds, all Latex beds are going to be the only mattresses that are really ‘natural’. (made of rubber tree sap, foamed, placed in the special centrifuge, then flash frozen) The only other chemical, unless they’re block foams in the base of the latex mattress, is a small amount of foaming agent.
Where-as memory foam will always have urethane foam in it. Some people are hyper-sensitive to urethane foams, and if it is not properly ventilated can make people feel sick.
If you love the memory foam feel, I would really recommend miForma however, because of how they compress and suction the gas out of their beds. There is no off-gassing as there is with Tempurpedic, or other memory foam companies.

Great video guys and some great information there too, I had no idea that latex came for the sap of a tree I thought that it was entirely man made, so that was something new to me.
The 2 of you seem to have a lot of fun going through the show!!!:)

Talalay is much more consistent in its density than Dunlop processed as well as the antimicrobial properties you allude to. Trouble is this natural processed product tends to be much more expensive.
