Deanna Duke, author of the The Non-Toxic Avenger, What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You, chronicles her journey to detoxify her life after her husband was diagnosed with cancer and her son was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. As she calls it, the “double whammy.” Although I think of myself as an educated chemical consumer, the book was eye-opening and a must read for everyone. As Duke aptly conveys, the time clock is ticking, and toxic chemicals are winning.
Deanna took certain body burden tests which revealed her level of toxicity for such items as pesticides, phthalates, and heavy metals. When you stop to think about how many personal care products you use, what you eat, and the products you bring into your home, you are simply living life through chemistry. Deanna reminded me of this very fact as she dissected each area of her daily routine including birthday parties, school supplies, the food we eat, and products we use.
What I loved about the book is Deanna’s easy way to describe how certain chemicals affect us. As the editor of the popular blog, the Crunchy Chicken, Deanna uses her way with words to make the subject matter not so heavy. In addition, she peppers it with home-made remedies and alternatives so anyone can follow in her footsteps. During her journey, she is comfortable sharing with us when her eco-plan went awry. But this is life. It is all a balancing act.
Now, I am not going to lie. It was hard for me to read the book. I had to put it down often since the subject matter was heavy. At certain points it made me feel a range of emotions from anger to hopelessness especially given that our own toxic chemical laws have not been updated since 1976.
However, in Deanna’s defense, she couldn’t or shouldn’t have sugar coated her story. It is a wake-up call. We are surrounded by toxic chemicals that are taking a toll on our lives. However, she has provided a very do’able road map that anyone can follow.
I highly recommend this book since Deanna is using her own body to highlight the dangers of certain chemicals in our lives. She just brings it home to a level that everyone can understand. Even educated consumers like me learn a thing or too.

It’s amazing, isn’t it, how much we are gradually learning about the way toxic chemicals in our everyday household products have slowly been killing us for generations now. I don’t know whether to be angry at the corporations who’ve developed these products for ruining the world’s health in their pursuit of profit, or to be mad at ourselves for not asking questions early on. Regardless, it’s good to see books like this that clear the air on what to avoid if you want to live a healthier life.

Brett, thanks for such a wonderful comment. I feel like I am in the same boat. The problem is most people don’t know to even ask the questions. Why should we have to be scientists to figure this out? By the way, your interview with Chuck Leavell was fascinating.

This book looks extremely informative on toxic dangers and easy, homemade alternatives. In addition to your research, I am excited about the Safe Chemicals Act which will help us ensure that chemicals are safe before they get on the market. Thank you for this post and for your continued leadership on this issue!
